Hi everyone, just a short one. After having felt so good on the pred, it had to happen. Not so good today, down to 15mg and tomorrow have to go down to 5mg. Feet and hips giving me pain again. Only had Amelie today, and Georgia is off on half term so she is a great help. Went out to take her to a group, bought some lunch, had coffee came home. By 3.30 I was completely exhausted. Luckily she went home at 4.30. Leanne (older daughter) cooked, and now I am just going to put the dishwasher on and go to bed. I have the day off tomorrow!!! Need that now!! Hope everyone is doing ok xSmile

Hi Barbara, maybe I have misunderstood? You are dropping from 15mg to 5mg? I am not an expert, but that is a big drop. Surely you should be lowering slower than that. Have you already reduced and that is why you are feeling rough? If so maybe you should wait a couple of days before reducing further or get advice? When on pred a few mg can make all the difference.

I wish you well.

Hi Barbara

That's one hell of a jump from 15mg down to 5mg in a day, have I misread it? If not, I would get that checked before actually reducing like that. It is likely that your body will react badly to such a huge drop and as you are already experiencing problems it doesn't like a good move. Mine have always been reduced very very very slowly like 15mg for one week, then 10mg for two weeks, reducing gradually by 1mg 2 weekly after that until down to 5mg.

It actually took me about 8 months to get down to the maintenance dose of 3mg that I am now on. The body produces its own 'steroid' but its own mechanism is temporarily shut down by the use of prednisolone. By reducing the dosage very gradually your body's own system kicks in and you won't experience withdrawal to the same extent, if any.

Hope you get it sorted before you suffer any more. Take care,

Lyn x

Hi Barbara,

I have never taken oral steroids but I agree with the others here, that seems like a big reduction in a short space of time.
It would be worth checking it out with your rheumy nurse or GP before reducing any further.
Hope you have a better day tomorrow.

Hi Barbara,

I too think that ii is to quick a drop, from 15 to 5. When I took oral steroids for asthma and RA, I had to reduce slowly over a couple of weeks, before gradually tapering down to 2mg and then nothing. I agree with Doreen, if in doubt check with your rheumy, and if it's correct tell s/he exactly how you are feeling.

Hope you're on the mend soon,

love,

Barbara

Hi Barbara

Thinking about it- when I was on pred I was given a week's supply then no more- I certainly wasn't told to decrease it. I can't remember what the dosage was- I guess it must have been low.

I hope you feel better soon- have a good rest tomorrow

Dear Barbara,

Best to re-check what dose you need to drop to tomorrow. I *think* it is different for short term usage though as long term steroids need to be lowered very very slowly..

Steroids are magical but only for a while, it is a false wellness sadly....

Much love to you,

Amanda

Irt seems odd to expect you to go down from 15mg to 5mg. I've been trying to get down from 5mg to 4mg, and it's been really difficult. I'm meant to go down to 3mg next, but I think I will have to do that really slowly too. Any faster and I feel really ill.

Have you checked with your GP?

Hi everyone, it was my GP who gave me the pred, I started at 30mg for one week, which was amazing. On the second box is printed, after one week of 30mg, take 25mg for 2 days, then 20mg for 2 days, then 5mg on regular basis.
I must admit that it does seem fast, but I just assumed thats how it was done. I dont feel great since going to 15mg. Maybe I should call the clinic and ask if I can continue on 15mg for a few days. Not sure what is supposed to hapen, as not been told much. I went to clinic last Friday and told him what was on the box and he didnt comment about the dosage. Thanks for the advice everyone x

Hi Barbara

That makes a little more sense now I know it's a short term thing! Even so ... I still think from an initial dose of 30mg it's a big drop to 5mg in the space of 10 days or so. And certainly experiencing the problems that you are it seems rather ambitious. Heyho, I'm not a medic and only go off my own experiences and those of others but definitely worth checking if you can maintain the higher dose for a while longer until things settle down.

Hope you feel better soon,

Lyn x

Hi Lyn, have left a message on the nurses line. Not too hopeful of an answer as waited 2 weeks last time!! If not willhave to call surgery on Monday. Was thinking maybe take 15mg for the next 2 days then 10mg for a week, then down to 5mg. Will try to get the ok though. I know ithas to be down as quick aspossible, but if it doesnt work then maybe it needs looking at. ThanksSmile

Let's hope they get round to phoning you back a little more speedily this time. If not the doctors surgery sounds your best option.
Good luck. Hope you get a relatively pain free weekend or at the very least a break from it now and again.
